DSEAR assessment software

Bring substances, area conditions and controls into one DSEAR record.

Assess one work activity or area with several dangerous substances, record ignition sources and controls, and keep hazardous-area classification explicitly confirmed by a competent person.

Free Basic plan · Web, iOS and Android

Safe Foundry can assist with structured facts and drafting; it does not make the final hazardous-area classification decision.

What you can do

Structure the assessment without automating away judgement

DSEAR work combines substance properties with the actual activity, quantities, containment, ventilation, ignition sources and emergency arrangements.

Area-based substance inventory

Add several dangerous substances to one activity or area, manually, from the register or with a fresh per-substance SDS-assisted fill.

Physical-hazard focus

Capture relevant Section 7, 9 and 10 facts such as flash point, explosive limits, handling, stability and incompatibilities without inventing missing values.

Confirmation before export

Record zoning outcomes, controls and emergency arrangements. Sign-off and PDF export remain blocked until zoning is confirmed.

How it works

From activity and area to controlled record

Start form-first or enter from a register chemical or storage location, then complete the assessment under competent-person control.

  1. 1

    Define the activity and area

Describe the work, place, indoor/outdoor conditions, ventilation, quantities, containment and container types.

  2. 2

    Add substances and hazards

Add each dangerous substance, review physical-hazard SDS facts and record ignition sources and relevant controls.

  3. 3

    Confirm zoning and sign off

A competent person records the hazardous-area outcome, then reviews, signs off and exports the completed DSEAR assessment.

Activity and area

DSEAR risk arises from how dangerous substances are present and used, not from a product record in isolation.

  • One activity/area per assessment
  • Optional storage-location link
  • Ventilation, quantities and containment inputs

Substances and ignition

Keep the physical-hazard evidence and the workplace ignition picture visible together.

  • Several substances in one assessment
  • AI-assisted facts remain reviewable
  • Ignition-source checklist and free text

Controls and governance

Record the measures and decisions needed for a proportionate, accessible assessment record.

  • Control and mitigation measures
  • Accident and emergency arrangements
  • Zoning confirmation, sign-off events and PDF export

Official guidance

DSEAR addresses safety risks from fire, explosion and metal corrosion

HSE says employers must identify dangerous substances and risks, implement controls and emergency arrangements, and classify areas where explosive atmospheres may occur.

Questions

What teams ask before getting started

Clear boundaries matter in chemical safety. These answers explain what Safe Foundry supports and where professional judgement stays essential.

Is DSEAR the same as COSHH?

No. COSHH concentrates on risks to health from hazardous substances. DSEAR addresses safety risks including fire, explosion and corrosion of metal. The same product or activity may need consideration under both regimes.

Does Safe Foundry classify hazardous areas automatically?

No. The zoning section requires an explicit competent-person outcome. Safe Foundry blocks sign-off and export while that outcome is unconfirmed.

Can a DSEAR assessment contain several substances?

Yes. One Safe Foundry DSEAR assessment is scoped to one activity or area and can contain several dangerous substances relevant to that scenario.

Can I reuse information from a COSHH assessment?

Where a linked chemical has suitable COSHH extraction data, Safe Foundry can copy overlapping identity and hazard facts as an explicit, editable action. DSEAR-specific physical-hazard and workplace judgements still need their own review.

Create a structured DSEAR assessment

Start with the activity and area, add the relevant substances, and keep confirmation with the competent person.
